What to Bring to the Class 7 Test in Alberta: ID and Parent Consent
What to bring to the Class 7 test in Alberta: photo ID, Alberta address proof under 90 days old, proof of status in Canada, and a parent if under 18.
For the Alberta Class 7 test, bring original documents that prove three things: who you are, that you live in Alberta, and that you are lawfully allowed to be in Canada. Your Alberta address document must show your full name and be dated less than 90 days before you hand it over. If you are under 18, a parent or legal guardian must come to the registry with you to sign a consent form, and you must be at least 14.
This post turns those rules into a checklist for teens, parents and newcomers. Every fact comes from Government of Alberta pages, the Alberta Driver's Guide 2026 and the Operator Licensing and Vehicle Control Regulation. Where Alberta doesn't publish a detail, we say so.
What to bring to the Class 7 test in Alberta: the checklist
The Class 7 page says you take the knowledge test at a registry agent and "You will need to bring acceptable ID." For a first licence, the ID requirements page says a registry agent will ask for documents that prove who you are, that you are an Alberta resident, and that you are lawfully entitled to be in or remain in Canada. Here is the full checklist:
| What you need | Examples Alberta gives | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Proof of identity (original, with a photo) | A Canadian passport (it can be expired, if it expired less than one year ago); a valid Permanent Resident card or NEXUS card | alberta.ca ID requirements |
| Proof you live in Alberta (original, paper or electronic) | Utility bill, bank or credit card statement showing an Alberta address; residential lease, mortgage document or land title; signed and dated written confirmation of Alberta employment | alberta.ca ID requirements |
| Proof of legal status in Canada (original) | Citizens: Canadian birth certificate, Canadian passport (can be expired less than one year), Canadian citizenship certificate (without photo, or with photo if issued before February 1, 2012) or e-certificate, or a NEXUS or FAST/EXPRES card indicating Canadian citizenship. Non-citizens: one original, not-expired document (see the newcomers section below) | alberta.ca ID requirements |
| Parent or legal guardian (if you are under 18) | They come with you, show proof of guardianship and sign a consent form | Driver's Guide 2026 |
| Glasses or contact lenses (if you wear them) | Bring them for the vision assessment | Driver's Guide 2026 |
| Alberta health care card (citizens and permanent residents) | Your health coverage is revalidated when you apply for your first licence. Bringing the physical card "can help streamline" this; without it, you show your mobile health card or sign a declaration | alberta.ca new licence and ID cards |
| Money for the test fee | The fee "must be paid for each time you take it." | alberta.ca knowledge test |
A few rules apply to all of these documents:
- Originals, in English. The ID page says "All documentation presented must be in English or accompanied by a written translation from an approved translator." Alberta publishes an approved translators list that sets out who can translate identity documents.
- The lists are examples. For residence documents the page says "this is not an all-inclusive list" and tells you to contact a registry agent for more examples.
- Your personal details. You must provide your legal name, address, birth date, photo and signature. If your name has changed (for example through marriage or a legal name change), tell the registry agent and show proof.
For the test itself (30 questions, 25 to pass, once per day, a fee each attempt), see our guide to the Alberta Class 7 knowledge test.
What ID is not accepted for the Class 7 test?
The ID requirements page lists these as not accepted as identification:
- debit cards, credit cards and cheque cashing cards
- Social Insurance Number (SIN) cards
- interim or temporary driver's licences
- business and organization membership cards
Is a school ID enough?
Alberta.ca doesn't say. School and student ID cards are not on the list of accepted examples, and they are not on the list of rejected cards either. The only photo identity examples the page names are a Canadian passport, a Permanent Resident card and a NEXUS card. If a school ID is all the photo ID you have, phone your registry agent before you go and ask what they will accept.
If you can't show enough ID, the page says "a registry agent can help you." You may be asked questions only you would know the answer to, or asked for documents only you should have.
Do you need proof of address for the Class 7 test?
Yes, to get the licence. A registry agent "cannot issue you a driver's licence or ID card unless fully satisfied you are a legal resident of both Canada and Alberta," according to the ID requirements page. You need at least one original document with your Alberta address, and:
"The documents must contain your full name, address and have a date of less than 90 days prior to being presented."
So an old bill won't work. Check the date before you go.
The registry will collect both a physical address and a mailing address. The physical address is printed on your licence, and the card won't be delivered if you have mail forwarding.
Can a 14-year-old get a learner's licence in Alberta?
Yes. The steps to getting a licence page says that to get a learner's licence you must:
- be 14 years of age or older
- have parental or guardian consent if you are under 18
- pass a knowledge test
- pass a vision test
The Driver's Guide 2026 also lists "have valid identification." The regulation (section 11) says a person who is 14 or older and less than 16 may apply for a learner's licence if a parent or guardian consents by signing the application.
If you are under 14, you can't get a learner's licence yet. Under the same section, the Registrar must suspend or cancel a learner's licence issued to someone under 14.
Do parents need to come for the learner's test in Alberta?
If you are under 18 and applying for your first licence, yes. The Driver's Guide 2026 says:
"Minors (under 18) applying for a driver's licence for the first time must have a parent or legal guardian accompany them to a registry office, show proof of guardianship, and sign a consent form."
What the official sources say about consent:
- Who signs: a parent or legal guardian.
- What goes on the application: the regulation (section 10) says the parent's or guardian's first and last name, relationship to you, and postal address must be included.
- Withdrawing consent: the Driver's Guide says the guardian can revoke consent in writing until you turn 18. If they do, the licence will be suspended.
- Exception: the Driver's Guide says a parent or guardian signature is not needed if you provide proof of marriage or self-support. In the regulation, this exception appears in section 12, which covers applicants aged 16 and 17. Section 11, for ages 14 and 15, only mentions a parent's or guardian's signature.
Alberta does not publish which documents count as "proof of guardianship," whether the consent form can be signed ahead of time, or whether the parent must be there for the knowledge test itself or only when the licence is issued. Ask your registry agent when you book.
What documents do newcomers need for a Class 7 licence?
You don't need to be a Canadian citizen. The ID requirements page says "You do not need to be a Canadian citizen to obtain a driver's licence or ID card." You do need to prove you are a permanent or temporary resident of Canada with one original, not-expired document. Examples Alberta gives:
- Permanent Resident Card
- secure Certificate of Indian Status
- Refugee Protection Claimant Document (for refugee claimants)
- a Government of Canada document described as:
"a confirmation document, permit or resident visa issued by the Government of Canada that gives you resident status in Canada for more than the next 90 days"
Alberta.ca doesn't list permit types by name, so check that your document gives you status for more than the next 90 days. The Driver's Guide adds that applicants from outside Canada or the United States "must produce suitable immigration documents to be considered as residents."
If you can't show acceptable proof of legal status, the ID page says you may be eligible for a one-time 60-day grace period. You visit a registry agent in person, pay the applicable fee and get an interim receipt, then return within 60 days with acceptable proof.
If you already hold a licence from another country or province, read Alberta's exchange a licence page first. Some jurisdictions have reciprocal licensing agreements with Alberta, and if yours doesn't, you may apply to have your previous driving history credited. If accepted, Alberta says this can give you access to a road test without holding a Class 7 licence for one year.
