Canadian Citizenship Test App Now in French: Study Découvrir le Canada in Your Language

The free Canadian Citizenship Test app now works fully in French: 850+ questions, lessons, flashcards and mock exams from Découvrir le Canada. How to switch.

Our Canadian Citizenship Test app now works fully in French. Version 1.8.0 adds a French interface and French study content: the 850+ practice questions, the chapter lessons, the flashcards and the 20-question mock exams, all based on the official IRCC study guide, Découvrir le Canada. It is a free update to the same app on iOS and Android, and you can switch between English and French at any time.

This post explains why we added French, exactly what is in French, how to switch, and how the French content was made. The test facts come from IRCC's page Study for the test and its French version, Étudier pour l'examen.

Can you take the Canadian citizenship test in French?

Yes. IRCC says the citizenship test "is in English or French". The format is the same in both languages: 20 questions, multiple choice or true or false, 45 minutes, and you need at least 15 correct answers out of 20 to pass.

The official study guide also exists in both languages. The English edition is Discover Canada: The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship. The French edition is Découvrir le Canada : Les droits et responsabilités liés à la citoyenneté, published by IRCC on canada.ca to read online, as a PDF or eBook, and as an audio version.

If you plan to take the test in French, it helps to study in French. The names of institutions, historical events and symbols appear in the French guide with specific French wording, and the French test uses that wording. Studying from English materials and translating in your head on test day adds a step you do not need.

What is in French in the app

Everything you use to study is now available in French, not only the menus.

  • 850+ practice questions. Every question, every answer option and every explanation, grouped by the 10 chapters of Découvrir le Canada.
  • Chapter lessons. The in-app summaries of each chapter, so you can read a chapter and then quiz yourself on it without leaving the app.
  • Flashcards. Dates, names, rights and symbols, in French.
  • Mock exams. 20 questions in 45 minutes, like the real test, with the same pass mark of 15 out of 20.
  • Results and progress. Your scores, readiness by chapter and the mistakes list all read in French.
  • Settings, onboarding and legal pages. The app opens the French privacy policy and terms of use when it is set to French.

The app itself is unchanged for English users. Same questions, same features, same free download.

How to switch the app to French

There are three ways, depending on where you are.

  1. New install. If your phone's language is French, the app opens in French the first time you launch it. The welcome screens also show an EN / FR language switch, so you can pick either language before you start.
  2. Already using the app. Open Settings, find Language and choose Français. Existing installs stay in English until you switch, so nothing changes unless you ask for it.
  3. Going back. The same Settings switch takes you back to English whenever you want.

Your progress is kept when you switch. Each question is the same question in both languages, so your chapter scores, mistakes list and mock exam history carry over.

How the French content was made

We want to be clear about this part, because it matters when you are studying for a government test.

The French study content was translated with the help of AI, working from the official French guide Découvrir le Canada on canada.ca. For each question we gave the translation the matching French chapter text and a glossary of official terms taken from the guide, then a separate review pass checked every item against the guide again. The goal was that the names, titles and dates in the app match the French guide, not a free translation of the English app.

If something looks wrong, open Report an issue on that question and choose Translation error. The report tells us which language you were using, and we review each one against the official guide and fix the content in an update.

The French test is still written by IRCC and based on the official guide. The app is a study tool and is not affiliated with the Government of Canada or IRCC.

A French page for the app too

The app's page on our website now also has a French version at honeymilkstudio.ca/canadian-citizenship-test/fr, with the French privacy policy and terms of use linked from it. If you know someone who is preparing for the test in French, that page is the easiest place to send them.

Frequently asked questions

Is the French version a separate app?

No. It is the same Canadian Citizenship Test app on the App Store and Google Play. French is a language setting inside the app.

Does the French update cost anything?

No. The update is free, and the French content is included in the same app at the same price as the English content.

Will switching to French reset my progress?

No. Your chapter scores, mistakes list and mock exam history stay the same. Only the language of the questions and the interface changes.

Is the French content the official IRCC guide?

No. The official guide is Découvrir le Canada on canada.ca. The app's French questions and lessons are a study aid translated with the help of AI from that guide and checked against it. Always read the official guide as well.

Is the real test harder in French?

IRCC describes the same test in both languages: 20 questions, 45 minutes, 15 correct answers to pass. Choose the language you read most comfortably.
