What ID Do You Need for the Canadian Citizenship Test?

Find out exactly what identification you need for the Canadian citizenship test — whether you're taking it online, in person, or via Microsoft Teams.

If you're preparing for the Canadian citizenship test, one of the practical questions you'll want to answer early is: what identification do you need to bring or have ready? The answer depends on which format of the test you're taking.

For the Online Citizenship Test

According to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), you need to have one of the following pieces of ID ready before you begin the online test:

  • Your permanent resident (PR) card — even if it has expired, it is still accepted
  • A valid photo ID with your signature — such as a driver's licence or health card (must not be expired)

That's it. You only need one of these two options. If you have your PR card on hand, you're covered even if it's past its expiry date.

Why Is ID Required for an Online Test?

The online citizenship test uses your webcam to verify your identity throughout the session. The system takes random photos of you while you work and compares them against your test photo and your application documents. Having a valid piece of ID ensures that the person taking the test is the same person who submitted the application.

For In-Person and Microsoft Teams Tests

The IRCC's invitation letter will include specific instructions about what to bring to your in-person or Teams test. The government does not publish a universal list for these formats — the details are provided in your individual invitation. Make sure to read your invitation carefully and follow the instructions listed there.

What Else to Know Before Your Test

A few other facts worth knowing as you prepare:

  • You have a 30-day window from your invitation start date to complete the online test, including weekends and holidays
  • The test is 45 minutes long with a countdown timer that cannot be paused once started
  • You can make up to 3 attempts within that 30-day period
  • The test consists of 20 questions (multiple choice or true/false) and you need to answer at least 15 correctly (75%) to pass

When Will You Receive Your Invitation?

Most applicants receive their test invitation 1 to 3 months after receiving their acknowledgment of receipt (AOR). The invitation will include your 30-day test window dates, your application number, and a unique client identifier (UCI).
