Failed the Class 7 Test in Alberta? When You Can Retake It

Failed the Alberta Class 7 knowledge test? It can be taken once per day, so you can retake it tomorrow. You pay each time, and alberta.ca states no limit.

If you fail the Alberta Class 7 knowledge test, you can take it again the next day. The official rule is that the test "can be taken once per day," and alberta.ca lists no other waiting period. You pay the test fee again every time you take it, and alberta.ca doesn't state a maximum number of attempts.

This post walks through what happens after a fail: when you can go back, what you pay, whether there is a limit, the translator option after three attempts, and how to use the time between tests. Every rule here comes from the Government of Alberta's driver's knowledge test page and its Class 7 learner's licence page, plus two older (2017) Alberta Transportation information sheets where noted.

How long do you have to wait after failing the Class 7 test?

One day. The knowledge test page lists the test rules, and one of them is that the test "can be taken once per day." The Class 7 learner's licence page says the same thing in plain words: "You can take the test once a day."

Alberta.ca doesn't list any longer waiting period after a fail. If you fail on a Monday, the earliest you can try again is Tuesday.

Can you retake the learner's test on the same day in Alberta?

No. Because the test can only be taken once per day, a same-day retake isn't allowed. You have to come back on another day.

Do you have to pay again to retake it?

Yes. The knowledge test page says the test "must be paid for each time you take it." So every attempt, pass or fail, has its own fee.

Alberta.ca doesn't publish the amount. The test is available at Alberta registry agent offices, so ask the office you plan to use about the fee before you go back.

How many times can you fail the Class 7 test?

Alberta.ca doesn't state a limit. The knowledge test page sets only two conditions on retakes: once per day, and a fee each time.

Does a failed knowledge test go on your record?

The official pages don't say. None of the alberta.ca pages or Alberta Transportation sheets we checked explain whether a failed knowledge test is recorded anywhere, or who can see it. If this matters to you, ask your registry agent office or contact Alberta's Motor Vehicles office (contact details are on the Class 7 learner's licence page).

What the rules do show is that your attempts count for one thing: the translator option below.

What if you failed three times? You can ask for a translator

If English, or the language you tested in, is the barrier, there is a specific option after three tries. The knowledge test page says:

"If you want to use a translator for a Class 7 knowledge test, you must first attempt the test at least 3 times using available options."

An older (2017) Alberta Transportation translator request sheet says the three tests can be "any combination" of English audio, English assisted, and the computer test in English or any of the translated languages. Alberta.ca's current page just says "using available options," so ask your registry agent office which of your attempts count.

How to request a translator

  1. Make at least three attempts at the Class 7 knowledge test.
  2. Email the address given on the knowledge test page: tec.licensingtraining@gov.ab.ca.
  3. Include your full legal name, date of birth, mailing address, email address, and the language you need.
  4. Wait for the decision by email. If you're approved, you receive a list of approved translators, and you can choose any approved translator with a valid TIN (Translation Identification Number) to attend your test.

The 2017 translator sheet also notes that clients are "solely responsible for all scheduling and costs" for testing and translator services.

The exception: your language isn't offered

You don't always need three attempts first. Alberta.ca says that if your language is not available on the computer-based test, "you do not need to take the driver knowledge test 3 times first." Instead, you can bring a translator with a valid TIN to your first test. If you already know such a translator, you don't need to contact the province at all.

The computer test is available in 25 languages, listed on the knowledge test page.

Other support options to try on your next attempt

Before the translator route, check whether a different test format suits you better. Alberta.ca says you may qualify for help if you have difficulty reading or understanding English, have hearing loss, or have a learning or medical condition such as dyslexia. The options for Class 7 include:

OptionWhat alberta.ca says
Translated testThe Class 7 test is available in 25 languages (translated tests are Class 7 only)
Audio testA narrated version using headphones; some registry offices may charge for disposable headphones
Oral testA registry agent employee or a professional sign language interpreter reads the questions and answers out loud; all oral tests are done in English
English conversion dictionaryIf you need minimal help with English, you can use a paper English conversion dictionary

Ask the registry office which options it offers when you book your retake.

Will the retake have the same questions?

Don't count on it. A 2017 Alberta Transportation information sheet says the Class 7 test "is randomly generated by a software program," with material "taken directly from" the Driver's Guide. Alberta.ca's current pages don't describe how questions are chosen. So memorising the questions you saw last time is not a reliable plan. Learning the guide is.

As a reminder of the format: it's 30 multiple-choice questions and you need 25 right, with no time limit. We explain the format, skipping, and how the test ends in Alberta Class 7 Knowledge Test: 30 Questions, 25 to Pass, No Time Limit.

How to study between attempts

The rules let you come back tomorrow, but that doesn't mean you should. Every attempt costs a fee, so it's worth waiting until you are ready. Some practical suggestions:

  1. Write down what went wrong while it's fresh. Note the topics that felt hard (signs, right-of-way, speed limits, and so on), not just "I failed."
  2. Go back to the Driver's Guide. Step 1 on alberta.ca's Class 7 page is to study the Driver's Guide. Make sure you're using the current edition. We list what changed between the 2023 and 2026 editions in Alberta Driver's Guide 2026: What Actually Changed.
  3. Practise until 25 out of 30 is comfortable. If your practice scores sit right at the pass mark, give yourself a few more days.
  4. Consider a different format. If reading English was the problem, look at the translated, audio or oral options above, or read about studying in Korean, Portuguese or Tagalog.

Can I retake my learner's test the same day in Alberta?

No. The knowledge test can only be taken once per day.

How many times can you fail the Class 7 test?

Alberta.ca doesn't state a limit. The current rules only say once per day and a fee for each attempt.

Do I have to pay again if I fail my learner's test?

Does a failed knowledge test show up on my driving record?

Alberta's official pages don't say. Ask your registry agent office if you need to know.
